Dr. Cynthia Gordon-Wellington

MD, LMHC, NCC
Board Certified Counselor

Cynthia received her Medical Degree from Medical University of the Americas where she was clinically trained in hospitals within the United Kingdom, the Philippines, the West Indies and the United States. From Hertfordshire, England to Birmingham, Alabama, Cynthia provided essential care to patients with diverse cultural contexts and economic strata.

She developed an interest in translational research as a clinical observer at the Medical Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health. As a Research Fellow for the Crystal Research Laboratory in the Department of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, she co-authored cutting edge research articles published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. This research was presented at the Annual International Conference of the American Thoracic Society.

Her work with immigrant families and Afro-Caribbean youth with suicidal ideation, launched her career path on a new trajectory. Cynthia received her Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from New York University; an advanced certificate in Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy from the Albert Ellis Institute; primary certification in Choice Theory/Reality Therapy by the Glasser Institute for Choice Theory; and certification as a Trauma Professional. Her inquiring mind and clinical acumen serve her well in this domain as she utilizes an eclectic blend of modalities across disciplines, including Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Informed Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Strengths-Based Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Brief Psychodynamic Therapy and Reality Therapy.

As a clinician, Cynthia is known to create a warm, supportive and safe space for clients to share their innermost thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Cynthia believes that therapy, at its core, is the process of unpacking, sorting, discarding, repurposing, laundering and reorganizing emotional baggage. What is checked? What is carried-on? What is left behind? What will enhance the upcoming journey? We cannot overcome what we have not processed.

Cynthia is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, and the New York Mental Health Counseling Association. Her favorite pastimes include cycling, trying new foods, swimming in the ocean, and listening to the perfect song on repeat.
